The last game of the 1960s turns out to be likely the most important game in New York Mets history. Gave Five of the World Series. It was also an important game for five individuals and the long ball played the biggest part. Obviously, Donn Clendenon had the most riding on the game, which took place on October 16th.
Clendenon hit his third homer of the series in the 6th off Dave McNally. The two-run shot put the Mets on the board. That was after Frank Robinson and pitcher McNally both homered and the Baltimore Orioles had a 3-0 lead. Clendenon's homer cut that to just one run.
Robinson was half way through his great run with the Orioles, while McNally was in the middle of four 20-win seasons. While they were both superb in this game, fate would lead cast-offs like Clendenon and a little know guy like Al Weis, to victory. Weis had a super series and homered in this game as well. Weis only had seven homers in his career, none more important than the one he hit in this game. He led off the 7th with the blast to tie the game at 3-3.
In the 8th came the clincher when Ron Swoboda doubled in the go ahead run and then scored on an error, making the final score 5-3 Mets, and the Amazin's has their first World Series. Jerry Koosman pitched a five hitter, going the distance for the win. For his efforts, Clendenon was named Series MVP.
